In the mid-1960s a twenty-something Hunter S. Thompson was just beginning his savage rise to literary stardom. Hells Angels had just been published and after several grueling years freelance writing, Thompson was attracting the attention of national magazines, publishers and agents.

In the summer of 1967 Playboy editor John Grabree contacted Thompson’s Random House publicist, Selma Shapiro, about writing for Playboy. The two exchanged letters for a year, discussing various story ideas about hippies, Haight-Ashbury, the rise of Jefferson Airplane and a Scottish gamekeeper claiming to be a werewolf. Thompson was eventually commissioned to write about U.S. Olympic skier Jean-Claude Killy, and the subsequent endorsement contracts he was offered after winning Olympic gold medals. The article, however, became snared in an ugly revision process and never made it into print.

Having worked tirelessly on the piece, the experience briefly soured Thompson’s relations with Playboy. Scanlon’s Monthly would go on to publish the article, The Temptations of Jean-Claude Killy in the March 1970 issue. In a December 1969 letter from Hunter’s second volume of letters, Fear and Loathing in America: The Brutal Odyssey of an Outlaw Journalist, Hunter writes to the editor of Scanlon’s Monthly shortly after Playboy had decided to kill the piece:

“Some people dig it for the word-action; others hate it for the style and tone. The editors of Playboy really despised it: Their edit/memos ranged from “This is a good Esquire piece” to “Thompson’s ugly, stupid arrogance is an insult to everything we stand for” and “This is our last adventure with H. Thompson; from now on we’ll read his prose in book-form, or not at all….”

Thompson and Playboy’s relations began to thaw in the early 1970s when Thompson was contacted by Playboy editor David Butler about writing a piece about a fishing competition in Cozumel, Mexico. The article, The Great Shark Hunt, eventually was published in Playboy’s December 1973 issue and became the title story of his 1979 anthology of articles and essays, The Great Shark Hunt. Thompson’s correspondences with Playboy document a burgeoning relationship at the height of his journalistic prowess. The handwritten addenda, feverishly scrawled on Woody Creek and Rolling Stone magazine stationary offer a fleeting glimpse into the life of not just Hunter S. Thompson, the drug-addled gonzo legend—but Hunter S. Thompson, the diligent, acerbic and always off-color journalist.

Making a Difference: Helping kids be kids, with support, nourishment and love

As I started to think about my first ‘Making a Difference’ segment, I knew I wanted to focus on an organization that was scalable – either in the sense that it could be serving more people if it were to have more resources, or it could be a potential model for other communities. I certainly found it in the incredible work of the non-profit Targeting Our People's Priorities With Service (TOPPS), in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and its founder Miss Annette Dove. TOPPS meets every need of her kids all under one roof. The program provides them with a safe place to do their homework and socialize after school; tutoring help; mentoring programs; the opportunity to visit colleges and the world beyond Pine Bluff; and healthy meals and snacks. Miss Dove also helps teach kids how to cook and make nutritious meals out of what their families receive from the food bank or the Salvation Army. On an average day, TOPPS feeds 280 kids, a number that rises to 440 in the summer. Often, TOPPS feeds kids’ parents too – there are some days when TOPPS feeds 500 people, and even more in the summer.

Dozens of kids participate in the daily tutoring programs and close to 100 make the commitment to participate in the mentoring programs that target young girls, older girls and high school-age boys. The waiting list to get into the programs is far greater than the number of kids currently enrolled. Miss Dove is incredibly – and justifiably – proud that the students in the tutoring programs, and particularly those in the mentoring program, stay out of trouble and see their grades improve. Five students from the older boy’s mentoring program, led by Miss Dove’s son Michael, went to college last year – five boys who may not have graduated high school without Miss Dove and Michael’s leadership and support. Many students told us that without Miss Dove in their lives, they would be failing school, have dropped out, be locked away in juvenile detention or jail, or possibly even be dead.

As Miss Dove told us, she fills the gaps she sees in her kids’ lives and in her community. She started TOPPS with the community reading program RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) in 2002 serving a handful of kids. In the decade since she founded TOPPS, Miss Dove and her team, including all four of her grown children, have affected thousands of kids’ lives. Beyond the direct services TOPPS provides, Miss Dove goes with kids to their juvenile hearings, their teacher conferences, sometimes even to talk to parents with substance abuse problems about getting sober and back on track.

In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a community with one of the highest per capita crime rates in the country and where more than 75% of kids are on reduced or free lunch plans, Miss Dove helps kids be kids – and gives them the support, nourishment and love to give them a chance to grow up into responsible adults. Mayor Carl Rebus said he couldn’t imagine Pine Bluff without Miss Dove and TOPPS. Lieutenant Shirley Warrior from the Pine Bluff Police Department told us that she, the Police Department broadly and the juvenile justice system all refer kids to Miss Dove. Miss Dove’s impact extends far beyond the thousands of kids she’s helped and the hundreds she serves daily – she’s affected the city of Pine Bluff and how it sees its future. Her city, her family, her staff and, most importantly, her kids at TOPPS all say Miss Dove is, indeed, making a difference.

Let’s be sure of facts in debates over firearms
Relaxing the restrictions will not lead to bloodbaths.

An armed society, science fiction author Robert Heinlein once said, “is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.” Let's put that another way: Those who fear that looser firearms restrictions will lead to a bloodbath haven't paid attention to the real-world effects of less gun control. And they haven't considered the obvious: Bad people always have access to all the guns they need; honoring the Second Amendment just levels the field and makes the bad people less likely to take on the good people.

The latest evidence, which you might not have heard given the deafening media silence, comes from Chicago and Washington.

Before the U.S. Supreme Court relaxed gun restrictions, the mayors of those two cities had dire predictions. “More handguns in the District of Columbia will only lead to more handgun violence,” said Mayor Adrian Fenty. And Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said his city was heading back to the Old West where “you have a gun, and I have a gun and we'll settle it in the streets.”

It didn't work out quite that way. Newly released data for Chicago show that murder and gun crime rates plummeted after the ban was eliminated, falling much more than the national rate. In the first six months of this year, there were 14 percent fewer murders, the largest drop since the handgun ban went into effect in 1982. This was also what happened in Washington in the year after the 2008 decision that ended that city's ban. The murder rate fell two-and-a-half times faster than in the rest of the country.

Of course, it is risky to draw too many conclusions from such short-term figures; these could be statistical anomalies. But it has happened over and over throughout the country – relaxed gun restrictions, less crime and violence. And in jurisdictions around the world, when guns are banned, murder rates rise.

This is of great interest in Indiana, where the General Assembly has made this one of the most gun-friendly states in the past couple of years. There are a great many things we can legitimately debate about that.

How much, for example, should the state usurp local authority? How can the conflict between gun rights and personal property rights be resolved when it comes to taking guns into a business? How smart is it to let people carry guns around openly in settings where we're not used to seeing that?

But let's be more realistic and a little less hysterical in our deliberations. When the facts don't support our fears, it's time to move beyond the fears.

go rent the movie "The Untouchables" , starring Kevin Costner, and "Connery, Sean Connery". Theres a memorable quote about "The Chicago Way"- that goes more or less like this-something about bringing a knife to a gun fight- he pulls a knife, you pull a gun. he sends one of your guys to the hospital, you send 10 of his to the morgue.

Its better to be safe than sorry. and speaking of safe- why is it illegal for a citizen to buy a kevlar vest? the cops all wear them- keeps them safe from most bullets up to a 9 MM. Our soldiers in Iraq? full metal jacket body armor that will stop a missile, almost.
You and me? we just stop a bullet, and die; or live if we're lucky.

and who among us doesnt wish they had Al Capones Muscle? no one messed with Capone. unless the wanted to risk a "drive-by" with a car load of "tommy guns"- aka "chicago typewriters". Got enemies? Wait till St valentines day- when you care enough to send the very best.

After the OK Corrall shootout with wyat Earp, and co; the "cowboys killed Wyatts brother Morgan( aka "Morg"- the mnenonmic way to remember which Earp bother was killed in tombstone- Morgue..) anyway- for years afterwards, one by one, all the suspected "cowboys" died of suspicious circumstances- all of Wyatt Earps enemies. Wild west frontier justice- true story.

The point? the federal constitution, and the Indiana constitution, and most other states constitutions have gun rights for a reason- so citizens can protect themselves from criminals. and bulletproof vests/body armor for common citizens is a nice passive protection start. gun permit/license laws? why should a citizen have to pay to exercist their constitution rights? criminals dont care, they dont "need no steenking permits". If a non- felon person carrys a handgun,in a forrest and no one sees it, is it a crime? Or only until they need to to escape a deadly situation? and how does a cop determine who they need to exercise"probable cause to check them? gun control is a farce, as long as criminals have guns, and mostly law abiding citizens dont.

Indiana fights a losing battle to curb gambling
People love to gamble, and online gaming is the hottest new thing.

It's probably a good thing McDonald's doesn't sell beer along with its Big Macs. Otherwise, the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission might swoop in to shut down the Monopoly sweepstakes game the restaurant is now offering.

The sweepstakes shouldn't be illegal under state law, because the winnings are based on a predetermined system rather than chance. You buy something from McDonald's, you get a free entry. But the company that provides a new type of gaming machine for northeast Indiana taverns thought its sweepstakes would be legal, too. The machines let users buy time to connect to online games. Buying the time, like buying a Big Mac, gets one an entry for the predetermined-by-system winnings.

But the state notified alcohol permit holders that the machines were illegal and authorized excise police to remove them and cite the businesses that have them. The only kind of gambling allowed involves pull tabs, punch boards or tip boards. Any other type of gaming, especially electronic gaming devices, “are strictly and specifically prohibited,” the state's notice said. How dare the taverns not keep up with what gambling is permitted or forbidden! Who do they think they are to just brazenly offer any type of gambling – the state?

This is one more example of the state's sordid double standard on gambling. Anything the state runs (like the lottery) or controls and profits from (like casinos) is OK. Anything else is illegal and immoral and to be roundly condemned. It's reminiscent of organized-crime mobs during

Prohibition that knew just how to deal with the competition.

And in this effort, the state is engaged in a losing battle. People love to gamble, and online gambling is the hottest new thing, with few people caring to distinguish between legal and illegal gaming. According to a study released by Merrill Lynch a few years ago, online gambling will peak around 2015 at $528 billion annually worldwide. You read that number right. Getting tough with bars that offer a tiny, tiny slice of that world along with beer and pretzels is a ludicrous effort.

And, of course, the state's complicity in gambling makes it difficult for people to take its efforts seriously. The state has no moral authority at all here – it fell off the moral high ground a long time ago.

Cherry Master

What It Should Be: A subtle game of seduction and defloration.
What It Is: An electronic slot machine from 1989.

If Dyna hadn't grabbed the Cherry Master name for its line of electronic slot machines in the late 1980s, I'm pretty sure it would have been a Japanese rape/dating sim by 1998. I've always found digital slot machines to be highly suspect. Establishments install them under the premise that they're more reliable than mechanical slot machines, but that's not the whole story. A slot machine is supposed to be a simple game of odds, but when mechanical spinners are replaced with digital code, the house can further stack the odds in their favor... and they do; Cherry Master has a dipswitch which allows you to choose how frequently the machine pays out. That means that Cherry Master knows whether or not you're going to win before you even put your money in. And while the machine only lets you toggle the general odds of winning, it'd be naïve to think there aren't additional cheats built into the machine. For instance, maybe the jackpot only gets paid out once every 500 wins or some shit like that. Every two years or so, a new Cherry Master model comes out, presumably to give operators increased control over the frequency and size of the payouts. The bottom line is that these machines are fucking stupid and so is anyone who actually puts money into them.

Anti-wealthy protests promote the wrong kind of occupation
Angrily goofy socialist overtones can only help Republicans

Surely it must be a well-camouflaged Republican satire of the far left, condemning the greed of others while demanding more stuff for themselves.

But no, insists the “Occupy (fill in the blank)” street theater of the absurd that began on Wall Street last month and apparently will make its way to Fort Wayne next weekend: We are serious about freeing America from the evil grasp of Wall Street's wealthiest 1 percent and returning control to “the other 99 percent” of the population the movement claims to represent.

How they hope to do that remains a mystery, although perhaps the “Overthrow capitalism: Workers take power” sign at a rally in New York City this week and the clenched-fist logo on the “Occupy Fort Wayne” website offer a clue.

To liberals who have longed for a tea party of their own, the movement is inducing flashbacks to the heady days of civil-rights rallies and anti-war protests. But for all their obvious differences, today's conservative tea party and many ‘60s activists have cited the same inspiration for their actions: the Constitution and the political equality and rights it guarantees but has not always delivered.

Equality of income, however, is not a right. Nor can it be achieved through demonstrations, politics or violence. Whatever Wall Street's sins, oversights and excesses – and they have been many – do any of the street protesters seriously believe they will automatically have more even if they somehow cause the fat cats to have less?

Antipathy toward capitalism is one thing; ignorance of it is another. Wealth is not a finite commodity, with someone profiting only by exploiting someone else. Wealth is created. Did any of the protesters communicating via their computers and smartphones stop to think how they had benefited from the genius of Apple founder Steve Jobs, who died this week? Do they begrudge him his success even though they, and the countless people who found employment because of him, would have been the poorer for its absence?

President Obama this week sympathized with the protesters while ratcheting up his attacks on the excesses of Wall Street. But Black Entertainment Television founder Robert Johnson offered some timely advice this week: “You don't get people to like you by demeaning their success. I grew up in a family of 10 kids, first one to go to college, and I've earned my success,” he said. “I've earned the right to fly private if I choose ... I went into business to create value for myself and my investors.”

“I've tried poor and I've tried rich, and I like rich better. It doesn't mean I'm a bad guy.”

Unfortunately, some people apparently think it does. Maybe that's why the same media that constantly accused the tea party of fomenting violence have shown remarkably little concern over the hundreds of arrests linked to the anti-Wall Street movement.

“I've learned to hate cops more than ever,” said one post on the Occupy Fort Wayne Facebook site – no doubt another Republican plant.

According to the Census Bureau, more than 48 percent of the population now lives in households supported by some form of public assistance – proof that government redistribution of wealth is fast reaching the tipping point. Before that happens, however, it might be helpful to remember how wealth and jobs are really created.

“White-black disparity in income narrowed in the ‘80s, Census shows,” the New York Times reported in 1992. The difference? Reagan promoted less regulation, lower taxes and a greater opportunity for profit. Obama has taken the opposite approach – with disastrously opposite results for minorities and others.

Tom Lewandowski, president of the Northeast Indiana Central Labor Council, said local “Occupy” supporters have asked him and his organization for support. But he's wisely taking a “wait and see” approach, even though he (and surely almost everybody else) agrees with their “we gotta do better” message.

“I'll be curious to see where it goes. But I'm not really for centralized power, whether it's the wealthy or the state,” he said.

Or even, I might add, in the 99 percent.

People or property?

The night before trash is picked up in my neighborhood, a guy in a beat-up truck drives around collecting anything of value left at the curb. Nobody objects, even though he could be arrested for taking the same stuff from inside the home.

I thought about that this week when Tyler White of Bluffton was also charged with feticide in the killing of his pregnant wife. How is an unborn child like an old pair of shoes? If you still want it, taking it is a crime. If you don't, it's a constitutional right.

And you probably thought we had evolved beyond treating people as property.

Ive noticed a trend- all the local labor leaders are content to sit back , and say "i got mine", and we got ours"; but when it comes to issues such as repealing at-will employment, and expanding collective bargaining laws, and other laws to help the rest of the non-union working class, who are sympathetic to the labor struggle; what do they do?
sit on the sidelines- - we'll wait and see. But if its prevailing wage laws, union oxes getting gored, such as in wisconsin, for instance, or even in INDY, well, theres a full packed house. common minimum wage, no benefit non-union workers? crickets...

Ben Franklin once quipped- "gentlemen, if we dont all hang together, we will assuredly all hang together"- meaning if the local union labor leaders, rank and file, police , firefighter, teachers, govt employee workers, democrats, socialists, greens, college students, and minimum wage workers dont organize to fight the tea party koch brothers schills, the eric cantors, boehners, mc connels, and big business, corporate greed; we will all be reduced to serfdom, little more than pyramid slaves.

Corporations should pay their fair tax share. American workers increasingly carry more of the tax burden than corporations do. In the 1950s, corporate income taxes accounted for about a quarter of federal tax revenues; now they account for just one-tenth, leaving workers to pay the difference. [Economic Policy Institute]. Following is a list of the top ten tax evaders in corporate America.

1. Bank of America took $336 billion in bailouts in 2009, but in 2010, flush with $4.4 billion in profits, it paid no taxes. Even Forbes magazine asked, how is that possible? Probably thanks to their 115 offshore tax havens.

2. Boeing just received $35 billion from our government to build 179 airborne tankers, but despite nearly $10 billion in profits from 2008 to 2010, it too paid no taxes, again thanks to foreign tax havens.

3. Citicorp took $476 billion from the bailout and then made monster profits in 2010, yet it paid no taxes, thanks to 427 subsidiaries in tax havens like the Cayman Islands and Hong Kong.

4. Exxon/Mobil, received huge oil subsidies from the government and earned $45 billion in 2009 but paid no taxes, again thanks to stashing profits in places like the Bahamas and Singapore.

9. Verizon, despite making $24.2 billion in pre-tax US income, paid no taxes and actually claimed a federal refund of $1.3 billion for the last two years, again all thanks to those offshore subsidiaries.

10. Wells Fargo, the fourth largest bank in the US, which took $107 billion in bailouts, wrote off all its losses by acquiring Wachovia, thus paying no taxes. Yet its CEO earned $5.6 million in cash for his salary and $13 million in stock.

Donâ€™t you wish you could stay where you live now but declare your income in Bermuda or the Grand Cayman Islands? Then you could go visit your money and write it off as a business trip.

The GAO (the Government Accountability Office) found that 18,857 US companies keep a post office box in one five-storey building in the Cayman Islands.

In fact, 80 percent of the largest US corporations use offshore tax havens. Little wonder 57 percent of these companies paid no federal income taxes for at least one year from 1998 to 2005.

Laziness & Dishonesty From Leininger
I love for these columns as they really demonstrate Leininger's contempt for his readers and the public he supposedly serves.

I remember when the Ft. Wayne Tea Party was in full swing, Leinginger granted at least three interviews to Emory McLendon, providing his column as a forum for the Tea Party leader to voice his views.

But when it comes to covering a similar movement on the other side of the fence, Leininger apparently can't be bothered to pick up a phone and actually speak to someone involved with the movement. Instead he trolls their Facebook page, provides an out of context quote, and offers little more than another one of his snide, self-righteous lectures.

It's lazy, dishonest, and strikingly worthy of a newspaper that is little more than a bullhorn for Steve Shine and all things GOP. Leininger doesn't serve the public, he serves his party.

JUST ARRIVED HOME FROM A BIRTHDAY PARTY, WHERE ONLY ALCOHOL WAS SERVED. MY MOM WAS DRIVING- SHE DOESNT DRINK. LEFT THE PARTY ABOUT 8-45 PM..
I WAS HOME ABOUT FOR 150 MINUTES. then the doorbell rings. Imagine my chagrin, and annoyance . shift sector 24 officer was at the door. I asked " may i help you , Officer? he stated there was a call about someone smelled marijuana from my property. I stepped outside, and said- I just got home about 15 minutes ago, from a birthday party across town, with my mom. Do i look High? do you smell any drugs on my clothing? or anything from the house? You can come in, if you want. My moms up0stairs, and she can corroborate that in about 15 minutes. theres no drugs hers. i dont do them anymore. its been over a year or more since i smoked anything. in fact, I dont even do any anymore.

I asked him why? whats up? he said someone called,a dn complained. I said - it must be a false report. but now there will be a police control/incident report about a "narcotics investigation on the police loh( see above. He said it will only show up as a 49xx address. ( swell, i thought- thats me, and my neighbor across the st, and 2 other neighbors with 49xx everyone else is either a few numbers higher, or lower. .
And thanks to whomever is calling, spreading bad karma, and dissenion on my block, and my neighborhood. theres several houses with a 49xx address, but I get a cop on my doorstep, but whomever looks at police reports, will now see over a dozen (?) i'm guestimating) calls to my block of my street, by every bureaucratic dept downtown, for harassment. FOR REALLY PETTY STUPID NIT PICKY ITEMS, AND COMPLAINTS- NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS, PEOPLE ALL ACROSS THE NEIGHBORHOOD. My neighborhood us under siege by a reign of terror of a- holes downtown, and a rogue cop- WHO i'VE ALREADY DOCUMENTED PREVIOUSLY IN THIS BLOG POSTS. AND A FEW ASSHOLE NEIGHBORS, AND EVEN PEOPLE I THOUGHT WERE MY FRIENDS, PLAYING "FALSE REPORTING" TO THE COPS "PRANKS(?) ON ME.

seems suspicous to me that this happens right after i post a facebook posting about crooked city cops, and politicians and illegal cherrymasters, and s cop councilman/deputy chief making some stupid staements about his oath of office, and cops, and laws, and so on. He needs to retire, as he cant run a mile without dropping dead, ditto for a bunch of other fat stupid cops that need to retire as well, and who are obviously crooked, ignorant, incompetent, or such- i get "special treatment- set up, framed, etc; while crooked cops go free? same with crooked politicians?

was this a n attmepted assassination, set up to seem like a robbery- a made up throw away line- any theif would use- your money, and weed. is that normal MO?

GOP caucus to settle personality differences, not policy matters

Allen County Republicans have set the gold standard for openness and transparency in local government. That much cannot be disputed. Our record speaks for itself, loudly and with conviction.

We believe deeply in the public's right to know what their government is up to. Republican elected officeholders have backed up that belief with action and legislation time after time. Long ago, Allen County Republicans discarded the idea that government works better when the citizens simply “trust us.”

You now have unfettered online access to information about where your money is being spent and with whom government does business because Republicans put it there. You have access to decades worth of documents and data online, information government previously made available on its terms, not yours, because Republican officeholders put it there.

An unprecedented spectrum of government meetings is broadcast on television and online, because Republicans thought that is the way it should be. The days when taxpayers had to sacrifice their scarce time and travel to the courthouse just to be informed citizens – something all of us should aspire to be – are dead and gone forever.

Republicans, uniquely and of their own initiative in most cases, threw open the doors to government and invited the public in. We do it all the time and believe that open doors are essential to good government. But that is apparently not enough for The Journal Gazette.

The public has said time and time again that it does not care to see politicians bicker and fight. They want us to do the public's business, openly and transparently in public, but without soap opera drama. Apparently, however, The Journal Gazette wants to see drama and conflict and falsely accused Allen County Republicans of secrecy and of settling our differences behind closed doors.

The accusation, made in an editorial published Aug. 23, is nonsense, pure and simple. It has never been our way and never will be our way so long as I am chairman.

On Aug. 16 I invited members of the Allen County Council and the County Commissioners to a political caucus to be held Sept. 6 at the Allen County Republican headquarters. I personally delivered notice of this meeting to The Journal Gazette, not exactly the action of someone trying to cloak a meeting in secrecy. I called this meeting to settle personality conflicts that arose between the two bodies during recent budget talks – not, as the newspaper suggests, to settle matters of policy behind closed doors.

Indiana's Open Door Law clearly allows for such a caucus. The newspaper's contention that “officials could easily decide the (budget) issue in the caucus and simply cast a public vote later” is simply not true. The law does not allow that in a political caucus. It is my duty as chairman and as an attorney responsible for abiding by the law to make sure we conform to the permitted parameters of a caucus.

To insinuate that we might do otherwise is an insult to an organization that has made openness a hallmark of its public service. We do not look upon openness as a perk to be doled out to citizens when we feel like it. We consider it essential, and our record has clearly demonstrated that.

This caucus is being held to settle personality differences, not policy matters. Families call their members to the dinner table to discuss how they treat each other. They do not take their fights into the middle of the street to settle them in full view of the neighbors. That is not openness. It is voyeurism.

Our state's public-access laws allow for other public business to be conducted behind closed doors, matters involving personnel, legal proceedings, collective bargaining and negotiations with economic development prospects. These are matters of real importance to citizens, yet The Journal Gazette raises no objection to them. It only objects to our desire to settle our personal differences so that we can get back to doing the public's business, openly and in the full light of day.

Rather than meddle in the affairs of a political party with which it clearly disagrees, perhaps The Journal Gazette should focus on changing state law's loopholes that actually impact public policy. Perhaps it should work toward more access to single-executive offices, like that of the mayor, where discussions and decisions happen every day without the benefit of public scrutiny.

The Journal Gazette does not advocate for city department heads to boycott mayoral staff meetings, yet it insists that those I have invited should skip a legal and legitimate political caucus.

If it desires to be viewed a champion of the public's right to know, The Journal Gazette should focus its ire on those who have yet to embrace the concept. Making false accusations of secrecy against those who clearly embrace openness does the public no good at all.

I'll certainly give Chairman Shine credit for his "political machine", and his skills as a "cat-herder" Par excellence'
And the GOP chairman has never shirked his duty for speaking for his party, unlike his cross town rival, chairman Bynum, who mostly seems to be a cardboard cut out, with a battery powered waving arm, and a remote control voice synthesizer that sounds eerily like kevin Knuth, who surely doesnt speak for me. and dont call me shirley..
And speaking of herding cats, His crazy cat lady mayoral Nominee is NOT going to be he next mayor. She has more flip flops than Mitt romney, or a summer clearance table at K-mart.

She is just as wacky as Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Sharon Angle, and the rest of the cadre of GOP women. Just because the car has big headlights, doesnt mean they are bright.

I will again give due credit to the chairman for his deep megaphone voice, and his unabashed skill in using it. as is his HQ- right on a Main downtown st, instead of waaaay out in south of town, behind the K-Mart south, or wherever it is- dont drive there at night- due to the crime. oops- i forgot the near fatal shooting/robbery a few short blocks away- that will surely help downtowns image as safe after dark, as well.

If the local democratic party would at the very least play copy cat with the local GOP, we might have a few more elected democrats in alen county, etc; but when they dont even try, and lose by forfeit, thats just inexcusable, and an embarassment. surely the democrats can scrape up a few good candidates , than scraping the bottom of the perennial barrell. It you run them, they will vote. It may be a pyhrric victory, or an exercise in futility, but a filibuster is better than nothing.
ohh- speaking of openess, i wonder- both chairmen/ etc- you think an active concerned citizen could get a printout of perecinct voters lists, and precinctcommitteepersons for fort wayne, and allen county? I would like to communicate with my elected officials, as is my constitutional right- they ARe elected.. so we can have the open, trustworthy, customer service oriented government the ocal GOP chairman crows about?

GOP challenge to Knuth candidacy tossed

“I know it’s going to depress Mr. Shine that they are going to have to win the race in the ballot box rather than on a technicality” - Kevin Knuth

The Allen County Election Board speedily dismissed ACRP Chair Steve Shine’s challenge of rival Democrat Kevin Knuth’s candidacy for the Allen County Council. Speedily, as in within hours of Shines filing on Monday morning.

Shine claimed that Knuth’s appointment "wasn’t valid because of missing paperwork in the filing as it didn’t include a copy of an authorization form granting Democratic Chairman Mike Bynum the authority to fill ballot vacancies":

State law allows party caucuses to fill ballot vacancies if nobody files for an office, or the party precinct officials can grant that authority to the chairman so a caucus is not necessary. The deadline to fill vacancies was last week. Knuth’s filing for one of the party’s council vacancies did not include a copy of that authorization.

Shine said this means either Bynum was never given authorization or the paperwork was filed incorrectly, but the election board disagreed.

Though the form says a copy must be attached to each filing, the election board’s past practice has allowed chairs to file one omnibus letter to cover all filings in a year, according to Andy Downs, Democratic board member. Downs said Monday afternoon the letter was properly filed for Bynum and the board will not meet to discuss Shine’s complaint. Instead, it will send a letter to Shine explaining the situation.

Perhaps Shine, pictured here after his disappointment, should pay more attention to his daily regimen than to the affairs of those who continually best him. . .

The impossibility of a socialist Jesus

Jesus was “pro-socialist,” American Christians are in thrall to Ayn Rand, and the early Apostles concocted a system of “egalitarian socialism backed by fear of death.” Such are the wild claims Gregory S. Paul made Friday on this site.

Socialism is a relatively modern construct, a governmental system invented roughly 1,800 years after Christ’s death, not a biblical mandate. The question, then, is whether socialism is compatible with Christianity, not whether the Bible mandates socialism.

How can Mr. Paul claim Jesus was “pro-socialist?” Jesus, after all, despite many demands from His followers, pointedly refused to establish an earthly government. Undeterred, Mr. Paul interprets Jesus’s “substantial encouragement for the poor” and warnings against the moral pitfalls of wealth as support for socialism. Yet one has to travel quite the intellectual and theological distance to equate admonitions towards charity and warnings against greed with divine sanction for the destruction of private property rights and the forcible redistribution of wealth.

But this isn’t Mr. Paul’s main argument.

He claims the Jerusalem church’s famous voluntary sharing of goods and property wasn’t voluntary at all but instead represents a “form of terror-enforced-communism imposed by a God who thinks that Christians who fail to join the collective are worthy of death.” This theological assertion -- a reading of Scripture that has completely escaped theologians for two millennia -- rests on the story of Ananias and Saphhira,

who were struck dead after they “lied to the Holy Spirit.” They had sold land, given part to the Apostles but claimed that they had given all. Here are the Apostle Peter’s words to Ananias:

Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.
Catch that? The very passage which Mr. Paul believes clinches his argument that the Bible endorses “terror-enforced-communism” actually reaffirms private property rights. The land belonged to Ananias, and after he sold it, the money was “at [his] disposal.” (Indeed, Jesus Himself declared that “the worker deserves his wages.”) His crime wasn’t withholding money; his crime was lying.

While the Bible is hardly an economics text, some economic and social themes do endure, and they are incompatible not just with socialism but also many aspects of the modern welfare state.

While the Bible calls us to help the poor, it is also clear that the poor must help themselves to the extent they are able. In 2 Thessalonians 3,

Paul warns against idleness and says, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” In 1 Timothy 5,

Paul also declares, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Even inclusion on the widows’ “list” (which entitled widows to receive aid from the church) was conditioned upon age and good conduct.

The requirement that the poor be industrious is also found in the one earthly government that God did explicitly create: Old Testament Israel.

In the midst of comprehensive laws that govern everything from religious ritual to sexual conduct to diet comes this instruction: “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner.” Not only is private property recognized (“your land”) but the welfare that does exist requires the poor to actually engage in the harvest to collect the gleanings.

Finally, it should be noted that Scripture hold societies responsible for outcomes, not just intentions, and the verdict of history is clear: Socialism creates poverty.

The few remaining, truly socialist, countries are mired in poverty and dependent upon the largesse of others to survive.

Even the capitalist/socialist hybrids of Europe, created in the short window of history when their capitalist success provided the excess wealth for socialist experimentation, are finding that fifty years of welfare is enough, that their safety net cannot be sustained.

Mr. Paul wrote his article as London burned, as Greece and Ireland are picking up the pieces from their collapse, and as Spain and Italy teetered on the brink of oblivion. Their idle but well-fed youth, demanding ever-more from a state they give nothing, are either in the streets or threatening chaos.

There is a reason why Christians have overwhelmingly rejected socialism, and that reason is not found in the pages of Atlas Shrugged, but instead in the pages of a much older -- and better -- book.

God’s people should “strengthen the hand of the poor,” not create poverty. Yet socialism impoverishes. How can a Christian be socialist?

Socialism requires coercion, and that in and of itself seeks to rob citizens of their free will. Handing over the fruits of one’s labor or ingenuity is charity only when it is voluntary and, arguably, heartfelt. In like manner, sacrifice is so only if one offers something that one owns.

As an atheist who neither hates nor fears religion, I think that the Ten Commandments are a pretty good idea and recommend them highly. It’s difficult to convey our rich culture and moral tradition to one’s offspring without organized religion. I’ve not noticed many popular media or government programs that have succeeded in doing so. In fact, they seem to deprecate what’s good and celebrate the bizarre, so let’s watch them carefully and seek to curb their reach and enthusiasm.

From Jesus’ socialism to capitalistic Christianity

A truly strange thing has happened to American Christianity. A set of profound contradictions have developed within modern conservative Christianity, big and telling inconsistencies that have long slipped under the radar of public knowledge, and are only now beginning to be explicitly noted by critics of the religious and economic right.

Here is what is peculiar. Many conservative Christians, mostly Protestant but also a number of Catholics, have come to believe and proudly proclaim that the creator of the universe favors free wheeling, deregulated, union busting, minimal taxes especially for wealthy investors, plutocrat-boosting capitalism as the ideal earthly scheme for his human creations. And many of these Christian capitalists are ardent followers of Ayn Rand, who was one of - and many of whose followers are -- the most hard-line anti-Christian atheist/s you can get. Meanwhile many Christians who support the capitalist policies associated with social Darwinistic strenuously denounce Darwin’s evolutionary science because it supposedly leads to, well, social Darwinism!

Meanwhile atheists, secularists and evolutionist are denounced as inventing the egalitarian evils of anti-socially Darwinistic socialism and communism. It’s such a weird stew of incongruities that it sets one’s head spinning. Social researchers like myself ask, how did these internal conflict come about? And why are not liberals and progressives doing the logical thing and taking full advantage of the inconsistencies of right wing libertarianism by loudly exposing the contradictions?

To understand why the pro-capitalist stance of many modern religious conservatives is at odds with Christian doctrine we need to start with the Gospels.

Jesus is no free marketeer. Improving one’s earthly financial circumstances is not nearly as critical as preparing for the end times that will arrive at any minute. He does offer substantial encouragement for the poor, and warns the wealthy that they are in grave danger of blowing their prospects of reaching paradise, as per the metaphor of a rich person entering heaven being as difficult as a camel passing through the eye of the needle (a narrow passageway designed to hinder intruders). This caution makes sense: sociological research is confirming that the more securely prosperous individuals and societies are, the more likely they are to lose the faith. A basic point of core Christian doctrine is that the wealthy have no more access to heaven than anyone else (and in fact may have less), offering hope to the impoverished rejected by cults that court the elites. This remains true in Catholicism, in which being poor does not constitute evidence of a personal deficiency, and church authorities decry the excesses of unrestrained capital at the expense of social justice.

But to understand just how non-capitalistic Christianity is supposed to be we turn to the first chapter after the gospels, Acts, which describes the events of the early church.

Chapters 2 and 4 state that all “the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need… No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had…. There were no needy persons among them. From time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.”

Now folks, that’s outright socialism of the type described millennia later by Marx - who likely got the general idea from the gospels.

The pro-capitalist Christians who are aware of these passages wave them away even though it is the only explicit description of Christian economics in the Bible.

To get just how central collectivism is to Christian canon, consider that the Bible contains the first description of socialism in history. Anti-socialist Christians also claim that the Biblical version was voluntary. Aside from it being obvious that the biblical version of God was not the anti-socialist Christian capitalists commonly proclaim he was, some dark passages in Acts indicate how deeply pro-socialist the New Testament deity is.

Chapter 5 details how when a church member fails to turn over all his property to the church “he fell down and died,” when his wife later did the same “she fell down… and died… Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.”

Dear readers, does this not sound like a form of terror-enforced-communism imposed by a God who thinks that Christians who fail to join the collective are worthy of death? Not only is socialism a Christian invention, so is its extreme communistic variant. The claim by many Christians that Christ hates socialism is untrue, while no explicit description of capitalism is found in the Bible - not surprising because it had not yet evolved.

So how did so much of Christianity come to reject socialism? That is not hard to figure out. In the early Protestant Netherlands, Switzerland and England capital became the dominant economic driver. Of course members of a religion want to think that God approves of what they are up to. So many (but not all) Protestants began to cherry pick those Biblical passages that could be massaged to seemingly support laissez-faire markets while pretty much ignoring those that clearly don’t. This works because, as surveys show, most Christians don’t actually read the bulk of the Bible, and people are mentally skilled at dismissing the awkward passages they do come across. Christians really took the theory that God is pro-capital to its extreme in what has be come the least socialistic and most Jesus-following of the advanced democracies, the USA, where many see the nation as an exceptional, God blessed “Shining City on the Hill” they think stands as the exemplar of Godly capitalism to the world.

In Puritan doctrine only the few destined for heaven can enjoy earthly wealth - that’s why there aren’t many rich folks - and poverty is the widespread sign of being destined for hell. But Puritanism was too dour for most Americans, so the notion that God wants his many followers to become as well-heeled as possible really took off with the emergence of the celebratory, self help oriented evangelical and Pentecostal Prosperity Christianity that the likes of Amy McPherson began to promote at the same time the modern corporate-consumer culture arose after the first world war.

The intellectual foundations for the alliance between capital and God were laid after the second world war by Catholic William Buckley, who, like some others contrived to maneuver around their churches’ skepticism about mercantile interests, worked to convert frugal church goers into materialistic consumers who spend their Sundays watching spectator sports and charging up interest loaded debt at the mall.

Back in the 1800s the non-theist Herbert Spencer adapted the evolutionary science developed by Darwin into what has become known as social Darwinism -- even though the biologist had little interest in socioeconomic issues, as well as a live and let live attitude about religion. It was Spencer who coined the term “survival of the fittest” that Darwin worked into later editions of his biology texts. Many Christians - logically concerned at the threat that a naturalistic explanation of human origins posed for popular belief in a supernatural creator - reacted by blaming harsh Darwinian biology for creating the similarly harsh “Darwinian” socioeconomics that they saw as responsible for the ills of the modern world.

At the same time socialists and communists were adapting those aspects of evolutionary science that they liked (a god-free origin of our world) while rejecting those they did not (the anti-egalitarianism integral to survival of the fittest free markets caused Marx and Engels to denounce evolution as a “bitter satire” on man and nature, and Stalin would ban pre-deterministic genetics for contradicting the blank slate theory of communism). While the communists drove the reasonable concept of social equality into the ground, Ayn Rand did the same with individual liberty. Because she hated the teeniest expression of the socialism, and because the concept was in the archaic Bible long before some non-theists decided it was the wave of the future, she promoted an anti-Christian, pro-evolution atheism so extreme that even most atheists including myself reject her claim to have philosophically absolutely disproved the existence of any god. But many influential conservative Christians have embraced her expressly atheistic theory of Objectivism that in her books such as The Virtue of Selfishness, they propose that government must be shrunk to a bare minimum so socially Darwinist that it dances with anarchy. Only then can entrepreneurial greed have the free run that liberty demands. Hence Rand’s more nobly titled Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead are required reading for the staff of Paul Ryan.

Skeptics Penn and Teller and Michael Shermer are atheistic libertarians. In the Randian hyper-materialistic world those who are on the financial make are the exalted makers, the impoverished that accept tax payer assistance are parasitic takers who need to fend for themselves. A radical modernist ideology in greater antithesis to the traditional scriptural favoring of the poor over the rich can hardly be imagined. Yet the economics of the plutocratic Republican Party that embraces the Christian, anti-Darwinist creationist right are essentially those of the uberatheist, anti-creationist, Darwin-adoring Christianity-loathing Ayn Rand. So we have Christian creationists like Jay Richards writing books titled Money, Greed, and God: Why Capitalism Is the Solution and Not the Problem. Can a stranger amalgam of opposing opinions be devised?

What I do not get from a sociological perspective is why -- rather than letting the right avoid being called out for decade after decade -- progressives from pious to atheist (most being liberals) as well as the mainstream news media have not been exposing the fascinating incoherence of the right wing’s anti-Darwinian biology, pro-Darwinian economics? Logically Stewart, Maddow, Olbermann, Maher et al. should on a regular basis challenge Christian libertarians on how Palin, Bachmann, Coulter, Beck, Limbaugh, Gingrich et al. can reject as ungodly evil the hard line socialism that is explicitly enforced by their God in the Bible they profess to read and believe? And how can those libertarians who manage to be devout Christians fawn over Ayn Rand whose entire philosophy is a condemnation of Christian doctrine? Also that O’Reilly and Bennett explain how they can continue to be in opposition to their pope who issued the newest encyclical reaffirming the churches opposition to libertarian economics. And ask if a person opposes evolution because it leads to ungodly societal chaos then how can the same person endorse the economics that most closely replicate biological evolution? It does not make practical sense for progressives to fail to use the deep, hypocritical conflicts that mar the right to try to split the movement at its weakest links. The right cannot reply in kind because progressives are less internally conflicted; although liberals too range from devout to atheist they share a secular sense of social tolerance, concur that the gospels are economically progressive, and agree that organisms have evolved over deep time.

In educational terms mainstream press coverage of the issue would be a public service giving the public the information it needs to decide whether or not current conservatism is fatally disingenuous. In a Washington Post column liberal Catholic E. J. Dionne Jr.

got things rolling by pointing out that the Rand whose books so many Christian conservatives treat as scripture was a flaming atheist.

proving that it is the most secular, liberal democracies that are enjoying the overall best socioeconomic circumstances in history, including lower rates of homicide, incarceration, juvenile and adult mortality, STD infections, abortion, teen pregnancy, mental illness, illicit drug use, and so on compared to the more libertarian USA, and superior levels of economic security, upward mobility and education?

And finally, if you don’t like socialism and communism stop blaming atheists and other secularists for concocting egalitarian collectivism backed by fear of death. It got its start long ago in the Good Book.

Should Christians be socialists?

In “From Jesus’ socialism to capitalistic Christianity,” Gregory Paul argues that American Christians who defend the free economy are involved in a profound contradiction, since Jesus and Christianity are self-evidently socialistic.

Let’s pass over his caricature of capitalism, since no one would defend the idea as he describes it, and get to the two big holes in his argument. The first is his claim that “many of these Christian capitalists are ardent followers of Ayn Rand,” a known atheist and anti-Christian. The second claim is that Jesus and the Bible are pro-socialist rather than pro-capitalist.

Mr. Paul’s attempt to paint Christian defenders of the free market as “ardent followers of Ayn Rand” might be more successful if he had bothered to give examples. Instead, he mentions Milton Friedman, Alan Greenspan, the skeptic-comedians Penn and Teller, and atheist Michael Shermer. All of these gentlemen are libertarians, but none is a Christian.

He observes that Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, a Catholic, has required his staff to read Rand’s Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Logicians will note that this fails to establish that Mr. Ryan is an “ardent follower of Ayn Rand.” Lastly he mentions me (also a Catholic) and my book, Money, Greed, and God, which is especially unfitting since I am a vocal critic of Rand, as anyone who has read my book or Googled my name would know. Mr. Paul then asks, “Can a stranger amalgam of opposing opinions be devised?” The strange amalgam of ardent Christian Randians, however, is a construct of Mr. Paul’s partisan imagination.

His assertion that Jesus and Christianity are inherently socialist fares no better. Although he refers to Jesus as a socialist, the only biblical texts he appeals to are from the book of Acts (chapters 2-5), which describes the early church in Jerusalem (after Jesus ascension into heaven). The central text is worth quoting:

Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. . . . There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it as the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. (Act 4:32-35)
Mr. Paul insists, “Now folks, that’s outright socialism of the type described millennia later by Marx-who likely got the general idea from the gospels.” No serious biblical scholar, or economist, would mistake the practice of the early Jerusalem church for Marxism. First of all, Marx viewed private property as oppressive, and had a theory of class warfare, in which the workers would revolt against the capitalists-the owners of the means of production-and forcibly take control of private property. After that, Marx thought, private property would be abolished, and the state would own the means of production on behalf of the people. There’s none of this business in the books of Acts. These Christians are selling their possessions and sharing freely.

Second, the state is nowhere in sight. No Roman centurions are breaking down doors and sending Christians to the lions (that was later). No government is confiscating property and collectivizing industry. No one is being coerced. The church in Jerusalem was just that-the church, not the state. The church doesn’t act like the modern communist state.

Mr. Paul completely misreads the later text in Acts 5, in which Peter condemns Ananias and Sapphira for keeping back some of the money they received from selling their land. Again, it helps to actually read the text:

Ananias . . . why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the lands? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, were not the proceeds at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You did not lie to us but to God! (Acts 5:3-4)
Mr. Paul asks, “Does this not sound like a form of terror-enforced-communism imposed by a God who thinks that Christians who fail to join the collective are worthy of death? Not only is socialism a Christian invention, so is its extreme communistic variant.” The only problem is that the text says exactly the opposite. Peter condemns Ananias and Sapphira not for failing to join the collective, but for lying about what they had done. In fact, Peter says explicitly that the property was rightfully theirs, even after it was sold. This isn’t communism or socialism.

Third, the communal life of the early church in Jerusalem is never made the norm for Christians. It’s not even described as the norm for the Jerusalem church. Acts is describing an unusual moment at the beginning of the church in Jerusalem. Thousands of Jews had come from a long distance to worship in Jerusalem at Pentecost, and then become Christians. They would have had to return home soon after their conversion but for extreme measures taken by the newborn church to allow these Christians to stay in Jerusalem. Given the alternatives, a mutual sharing of possessions seemed like the obvious solution.

Compared to modern nation states, the Jerusalem church was a tiny community dealing with a particular problem. It’s unlikely that all these new Christians, many denizens of the Jewish diaspora, stayed in Jerusalem for the rest of their lives. Most probably returned home at some point, and brought their new faith with them.

Fourth, we know from the New Testament that other churches in other cities had quite different arrangements. For instance, St. Paul told the Thessalonian Christians to “earn their own living,” and warned, “Anyone unwilling to work should not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3: 10, 12). Apparently some new Christians had begun to take advantage of the generosity of their new brothers in the faith. Given this all-too-human tendency to free ride on the generosity of others, it’s no surprise that the early communal life in Jerusalem was never held up as a model for the how the entire church should order its life, let alone used to justify the state abolishing private property. So, contrary to Mr. Paul’s confident assertions, the early church in Jerusalem was not socialist and does it set a Christian precedent for socialism.

The Bible isn’t an economics textbook, but I and many other Christians believe its underlying principles are most consistent with the free economy. There are reasonable critiques of that opinion, but Gregory Paul’s is not one of them.

If there was ever an example of starting with the desired outcome and then working backward to justsify your position, this article is it. There is no doubt that Jesus was concerned with the sick and economically downtrodden. He wanted to heal, feed and econcourage those who "the system" had bypassed. Love thy neighbor, and not coveting things or wives is not really consistent with capitalism. If people weren't greedy and coveting capitalism wouldn't exist. Human nature is consistent. Trying to be better than the greed and corruption in ourselves is what helps us be close to God. No one can be forced into goodness.

Are you sure? Four of your five "thumptations", as per many contemporary NT scholars who have studied the NT in detail, are historically unreliable. e.g. Professor Gerd Ludemann in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, see pp. 694-695 for a summary.

I've read the Bible cover-to-cover four times and no where does it advocate the forced redistribution of wealth (socialism). One of the over-arching themes found in the Bible is the concept of individual responsibility: I am responsible for providing for myself and for the consequences of my choices/actions. You are not responsible for me. Charity and helping the less-fortunate is heartily encouraged *but* *not* *commanded*.

Somewhere in the NT it says "Let those who will not work not eat."

I've always found it interesting that when God created the Tithe he commanded *all* to give a flat 10% of their income; no brackets and no decuctions. See Less

An answer to your question:

Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Most contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with J's gospels being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European, white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

LOWELL, MA–Jeremy Novato, a recent graduate of a well-respected Lowell high school, has secured a position with the McDonald's Corporation, a high-ranking Fortune 500 company.

Recent McDonald's hire Jeremy Novato at the Fortune 500 company's Exeter Road branch.

"I'm tremendously excited to have this opportunity to work with the world's number-one restaurant chain," said Novato, 18, pouring ketchup into a large metallic pump dispenser at the $41 billion company's Exeter Road branch Monday. "I am determined to prove that their difficult decision to go with me over Dashanté Simmons was not a mistake."

According to Novato, it was McDonald's impressive Fortune 500 rank of 132–along with the fact that a branch office is located just down the street from his parents' house, where he resides--that convinced him to sign with the company.

"I had competing offers from both Dairy-Freez and Lube-In-10, but neither of those companies makes the list of top-grossing Massachusetts businesses, much less the Fortune 500," Novato said. "Dairy-Freez actually offered me a compensation package that was slightly better than the one I stood to receive at McDonald's, with a base salary of $6.25 an hour and a 50-cent raise after the first month, plus a $25 signing bonus. But in the final analysis, I felt it was in my long-term best interest to go with a global leader."

Guaranteed at least 32 hours a week in his new post, Novato said he is "extremely enthused by the numbers [he's] seen" in McDonald's financial summaries.

"For the six months ending June 6, total revenues for the company rose 7 percent to $6.9 billion," Novato said. "Net income rose 6 percent to $976.8 million. That's healthy growth."

Even more encouraging, Novato said, is the company's aggressive expansion into overseas markets.

"Earlier this year, McDonald's opened a restaurant in French Guiana, bringing the total number of nations in which it operates to 119," Novato said. "And, as John Ivankoe of J.P. Morgan recently noted, McDonald's stands to be one of the major U.S. players in the Asian Pacific region and Latin America in the coming decade. That's very exciting for a new member of the brain trust like myself."

Despite Novato's tender age, McDonald's executives are confident that he can bring a new dimension to the company.

"We're very happy to have Jeremy on board," said Gabe Diaz, manager of the Exeter Road location. "I saw a lot of extra-curricular activities on his application, and that's always a good sign."

In his first days on the job, Novato has already shown great promise. He has absorbed vital information about how the Exeter Road link in McDonald's chain of stores works, including where the brooms are kept and how to break down the cardboard boxes for recycling pick-up.

"Right now, I'm just trying to take in as much as I can, watching everything that goes on around me," said Novato, who, as a drive-thru cashier, will directly handle a portion of the company's projected year-2001 revenue of $14 billion. "But hopefully soon, I can get in there and begin to effect some real changes of my own."

Novato's plans include a full-scale restructuring of the walk-in freezer to get the chicken-patty bags off the floor and the installation of a paper-towel dispenser above the sink in the grill area.

"I can't tell you how energizing it is to be part of a dynamic company that controls a whopping 16 percent of the U.S. fast-food market," Novato said. "There's just so much to look forward to."

McDonald's CEO Jack Greenberg agreed.

"We just won a competitive bid with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority to open 11 new food-service plazas," said Greenberg, speaking from the company's Oak Brook, IL, headquarters. "Those outlets should translate to an additional $50 million in annual sales. In addition, we recently reached an exclusive agreement with Hasbro to sell Hello Kitty and Transformers Beast Machines figures."

Novato has already been tabbed to play a role in the multimillion-dollar Hasbro deal, assigned the important task of folding the specially designed Hello Kitty Happy Meal boxes.

"If handled correctly, this in-store promotion could be as successful as the one for Teenie Beanie Babies, which resulted in mile-long lines out the door," Novato said. "That would mean a strong final quarter heading into 2001 and plenty of extra weekend hours for me."

Farmers turn talk to debt, politics

NEW HAVEN – Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, wanted to know what was on farmers’ minds Wednesday.

It wasn’t farming.

His audience at New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Ag Appreciation Day peppered Stutzman with questions about the national debt, the health care law, interest rates, oil drilling and business regulations.

“This is the problem: Government is trying to control the economy,” Stutzman told the crowd. “They are trying to hold on and trying to save the ship here. I don’t want to see a disaster, but at some point there are always going to be corrections in the (stock) market.”

The Federal Reserve “has tried to control the market too long,” he said at Jefferson Township Park. “At some point, there’s going to be some major ramifications from it.”

Stutzman, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, was the only person to talk about next year’s renewal of the farm bill.

“I tell you, we are going to see a reduction” in funding, the freshman lawmaker said. “We need to see a reduction across the board. We don’t want to turn around and see that money stuck into another government program.”

More than 100 people listened to Stutzman for 45 minutes. Some offered comments on the government’s fiscal condition.

Regarding last week’s House-Senate-White House agreement to raise the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit, Allen County farm and business owner Jim Wyss complained: “There were no (spending) cuts. It’s a bunch of horse hockey.”

Stutzman agreed, saying the bill merely will trim the growth of spending planned years from now.

“I don’t think there should be any sacred cows,” he said, including the military.

“We want real cuts, and we want cuts sooner rather than later,” Stutzman said about 66 House Republicans, himself included, who voted against the debt deal.

State and local governments should take over health, welfare and education programs from federal agencies, Stutzman said, and federal regulators should back off manufacturers and other businesses.

“For us as farmers, when we see a problem, we go fix it,” Stutzman said. “… We need to fix the problem.”

Stutzman cited a “large philosophical divide” among Republicans and Democrats in Washington, D.C., as well as deep cultural differences across the country.

The former state legislator from Howe said most Indiana lawmakers, regardless of party, “have a lot more in common” on social issues, including their opposition to abortion rights.

“But when you go to Washington, you’re talking Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine – the culture is different. It’s just a different culture. It is.

“There’s a cultural difference between us in the Midwest, the South and the East Coast and the West Coast. We have a society where people feel entitled. It’s more of a take, take, take mentality rather than ‘how can I help, how can I help my neighbor across the street, how can I give?’ ”

Other speakers at Ag Appreciation Day included Larry Stenberg of Dow AgroSciences and Steve Pitman of ethanol producer Poet, which has plants in Wabash and Jay counties. The event was sponsored by Central States Enterprises.

Verbatim: Stutzman calls S&P rating 'obituary' for deficit spending

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, issued this statement Saturday:

Washington, D.C. – After ratings firm Standard & Poor’s declared that U.S. Treasury debt was no longer among the safest investments in the world and removed the triple-A rating that the U.S. has maintained for seventy years, Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03) issued the following statement.

“Standard and Poor’s announcement that they lowered the United States’ long-term credit rating to AA+ must be the obituary for reckless deficit spending. For years, Washington avoided the tough decisions of leadership and chose instead to saddle our children with trillions of dollars in debt. Those days are over.”

“At a time when our nation borrows 42 cents on the dollar, increased spending, threats of tax increases, and more of Washington’s gimmicks aren’t the solutions that Americans demand — they’re exactly the policies that drove us into this ditch.”

“President Obama didn’t start us down this road but he certainly shifted into overdrive. Since he took office, the national debt has increased by $3.7 trillion. Just this spring, he asked for a blank check increase to the debt ceiling. S & P’s decision is more proof that the addiction is catching up to Washington. Unfortunately, the President has failed to offer a serious proposal to kick the habit and tackle the drivers of our debt. His colleagues in the Senate aren’t just opposed to balanced budgets. They’re opposed to any budget and haven’t passed one in well over 800 days.”

“I’m not going to squander time with half measures. The only serious plans are coming from the House. My colleagues and I are committed to getting our fiscal house back in order. We’ve passed our budget, The Path to Prosperity that cut $6.2 trillion over ten years and put our nation on a strong footing. We passed the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act to cut $5.8 trillion, cap spending at 20% of GDP, and send a Balanced Budget Amendment to the states. We have a long way to go but I’m confident we’ll see this through.”

Congressman Stutzman represents the 3rd Congressional District of Indiana and serves on the House Committee on Agriculture, the House Committee on the Budget and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. Indiana’s 3rd District contains all of DeKalb, Kosciusko, Lagrange, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley counties, as well as parts of Allen and Elkhart counties.

Stutzman still sees issues with Boehner plan

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, is part of the conservative freshman class in the House that might buck the Republican speaker on his debt-limit plan.

And as a deputy whip, he is a member of the House leadership team that needs the backing of many of the 87 GOP freshmen to increase the $14.3 trillion national debt limit.

“It’s a difficult spot,” Stutzman said Wednesday.

Whips and their deputies assess how caucus members will vote on bills and try to persuade the rank-and-file to follow party leaders’ positions.

“We’re the ears on the ground right now, listening to what other members are saying and sharing those concerns with leadership,” Stutzman said.

By Wednesday afternoon, he had yet to endorse the latest debt-ceiling proposal from House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

“I’ve whipped undecided,” he said in an interview. “I’m still undecided.”

Like many conservatives, Stutzman said, “I would like to see a stronger plan.”

But he and Rep. Mike Pence, R-6th, sounded as if they are leaning in the direction of Boehner’s revamped blueprint, which would reduce government expenses dollar-for-dollar in exchange for a $1 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, cut $1.8 trillion more in spending over the next decade, and have the House vote separately on a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The package is a more modest, two-part version of last week’s “cut, cap and balance” bill approved by the House but rejected by the Democratic Senate.

“There is much that recommends it,” Pence said in a floor speech Wednesday, advising his colleagues “to keep an open mind” on the measure.

He and Stutzman agreed a key provision is a vote on a balanced-budget amendment. Pence called it a chance for Congress to “make history” on spending restraints.

“If we can’t get ’em married together, at least walk ’em down the aisle together,” Stutzman said about the two bills, both of which might come up for votes today.

The latest debt-reduction proposal from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would trim a little more than $2 trillion in spending without a tax increase on wealthy Americans, an earlier demand by Democrats.

“I wish both Reid’s plan and the Boehner plan were stronger, but right now in a divided government, this is possibly what we’re going to get,” Stutzman said.

He said he would be willing to support a temporary extension of the debt limit to continue negotiations rather than have the government risk defaulting on federal loan obligations.

“We can’t afford to put the economy in limbo or take a step backward,” he said.

“Back in Northeast Indiana, I’m hearing from folks who understand that Washington has to get serious about its spending problem. Families know that Washington is going to have to put its house in order the same way they do—by passing a real budget to tackle the problem head on. My colleagues and I in the House passed such a budget, ‘The Path to Prosperity.’ We cut $6.2 trillion over ten years and broadened the tax base without increasing rates. “Today, the President blamed much of the nation’s problem on a ‘month of wrangling’ over the debt ceiling. Unfortunately, this timeline skirts the fact that, back on May 31, the House voted on his original request for a debt ceiling increase that cut nothing and ignored the deficit.”

“Even after S&P’s announcement, the President continues to push the same worn-out ideas. He called for ‘tax reform that will ask those who can afford it to pay their fair share.’ That’s exactly the enthusiasm for tax increases that he has shown every step of the way. The reality is that we can’t tax our way out of a spending mess, especially at a time of unprecedented unemployment.”

“Historic unemployment rates and our mounting debt aren’t going to be solved with speeches. Americans want solutions. My colleagues and I in the House are offering them. It’s time for the Senate and White House to end the bickering and come to the table with serious proposals.”

Teens’ racy photos shielded by constitution, judge says

FORT WAYNE – A federal judge says an northeast Indiana school district violated the First Amendment rights of two teenage girls who were punished for posting sexually suggestive photos on MySpace during their summer vacation.

The teens filed a lawsuit in October 2009 claiming the Smith-Green Community School Corp. improperly banned the then-sophomores from extracurricular activities for expression that didn’t involve Churubusco High School.

The suit contended that the district humiliated the girls by requiring them to apologize to an all-male coaches’ board and undergo counseling after the photographs were circulated at school.

U.S. District Judge Philip Simon ruled Wednesday that the photographs were protected by the First Amendment and didn’t meet the definition of obscenity under Indiana law.

School district attorney W. Erik Weber said Thursday the district was disappointed but hadn’t decided whether it would appeal.

I was involved with a group that used the FOP hall as a meeting place, and i was amused by the fact that there were cherrymasters, and fort wayne amusement device stickers "affixed theretofore"; in accordance with the "amusement device ordinance". which was requested by then city councilman Henry to repeal, which it was. I recently found out that Mrs Vandeever was the bookeeper for the FOP; and just like Al Capones bookeeper, she is the key witness to police corruption. ridle me this? in 1995, april NS- i forget the exact day, Nancy Nall wrote a candidate review, about y city council at large run. I stated that illegal cherrymasters should be raided( or legalized, taxed, and etc. a few months before that, were the river city police riads, and a few other places, where there is a news photo of cops rolling illegal cherrymasters out the door or river city saloon- in cooms/tecumseh street( former GTE? property).
FWPD ciehf Neil Moore was relieved of his jobb coincidentally/ suspiciously close after those raids Its not the crime, its the cover up.
My point in this line of resaoning, is that the city cops, clearly knew that cherrymasters were illegal, and these gambling devices are illegal, whether you are a cop, or a bar owner. I suppose the cops could rationalize that it was "for amusement purposes only: but while these meetings were held at the fop hall, which i atneded, the machines were on, and people were playing them, contrary to manymanylaws, not the least of which was the drug den ordinance. Which i and tom Ostrognai pestered the city council to pass- tom was the point man, i was the willing accomplice.
So Linda Vandeever, and guilt by association, jerry, are surely guilty of some crime, and where are the accounting books, deposit tickets, etc- illegal racketeering, wire fraud, moneey laundering, by the cops, and the vandeevers- police corruption- improper conduct clear and simple.
Next- everybody knew cherrymasters are/were/still are illegal. cops, politicians, judges, prosecutors, etc. such as Helmkes cronies in the prosecutors office- mcAlexander, McCauley, Helmke, Payne brown, chief moore, all the FWPD officers , and esp the vice cops- who violated their oaths of office to uphold the laws, and are certainly guilty of breaking laws, by omission, and commission.

With respect to Mayor Henry's police dept appointees, chief Yorks should be fired. ditto chief Bender, and the whole rest of any member of the FOP; who may have attended any FOP union meetings at the FOP hall where those several illegal cherrymasters were situated, and esp if they "played them".
And any cops that investigated cherrymasters by hanging out in suspect bars, sitting on their butts, for hours, watching players play illegal cherrymasters, and receive payouts, as well. How hard is it to sit and watch the player win a jackpot, wave to the server, who goes to the bartender, the bartender counts out the money, gives it to the server, and pays the player; then resets the countdown counter. Instead of the most time consumeing method, of playing them, trying to win a jackpot? overtime, time sheet fraud?
Iknow personally of several city cops who worked at certain bars, where there were cherrymasters, and would joke with them as they checked my ID- hello officer X, Y, Z- guarding the cherrymasters tonight? have fun. Also a certain prominent judge, as well, whom i have drank (?) with, at bars.
Then we have many GOP politicians, and elected officials, and judges who- at candidate forums, i would stand at the door way, shaking hands with attendees( i learned how to campaign) ; and ask them , so Mr/mrs XYZ= - what about those illegal cherrymasters- when are you going to legalize them, or do your jobs, and obey the laws, and shut them down?
Then we have the usual parade of govt/police types- health inspectors, vice cops, ( amusement device ordinance stiekrs affixed theretofore) ; excise cops, cops called to keep the peace, cops hired to work the door/security/moonlight; and so on- who i'm sure couldnt have missed the noisy, blinking lights of illegal cherrymasters.
Then we have city controllers, (including the current one), a former sheriff deputy working in civil city accounting, and the past ones, who were responsible for the amusement device license ordinance compliance- indivudal operators at bars, and local distributors, who made payment to the city govt to obtain their illegally issued,illegally affixed, illegally possessed on preimses illegal cherrymasters, which - well. you get the idea.
Councilman harer had a post in his blog, of the deer park saloon, acrossfrom st francis, where there is a illegal cherrymaster machine in the background of the photo-owned by the Henry family. theni made a police report- control number 02f-055175 to a Lt stoner(!!) who was a fwpd vice cop, about the illegal cherrymasters in tom and condy henry's bar, the green frog. These were there while he was city councilman, because i asked him about it several times; and also since he is mayor, he should come clean about what he knew, and when did he know it?

furthermore, I have archives in the ether/internet, and which are on some city server somewhere, of all the hundreds of e-ails i sent to various cops, politicians, etc; about illegal cherrymaster rackets.

heres one you might find amusing. I was taking a communications laws class at IPFW, a few years back, taught by Tracy WArner, of the JG.a guest speaker was Judge sims- the former crusading prosecutor- fort wayne books case, and racketeering. Just before class, i went up to say hi, as we are casualy acquainted- and i asked him- so, judge- are you here to talk about the illegal cherrymaster racketeering? what did you know, and when did you know it? he gave some sheepish grunt of an answer, and i said, well, gotta ask, your honor.
later, after he told of his case, and how he rounded up all the small fry, local operators, and shut down the bokstores, i asked him well, your honor? why did you stop there? you had a major racketeering case- you could be governor, senator, or attrorney general? He danced around the answer, but he told of civil and criminal racketeering laws, and imade a note of this- he cited state statute, and federal, which coincidentally included political and police corruption.'
So you can get an idea of how deep this case goes, google "las vegas and "gallardi" both the lasv egas sun, and the las vegas review journal( primarily covered this mass corruption case.

Back to the city PD- Chief York, chief Bender, , former chiefs hannaford, adn moore need to be questioned, and all their officers staff. John Grannan(?) was vice copchief/capt/lt- he needs to be questioned as well.
and Mayor Helmke, Payne brown( public safety director atthe time) ; former Mayor Graham richard too.
And proseturos office staff. Judge surbeck orderd several illegal cherrymasters destroyed, in one notalbe court case.

then we have Brad Thompson, and Jeff Berry, and their KKK, who evetually shut down Legion post 82 thriving 2 dozen madhine casion, and eventual y killed the entire building completely. i guess a civil war battle between a us,and confederate veterans group? speking of corruption the system- i can personally attest to the fact that one of the bars i frequented, that hire dcops a seciurity, that i drank beers with judges, was owned by a present emember of the police dept public safety review board- who sit in judgement of cops in discilpinary proceedings. And that bar woenr, s attorney is/was mark giaquints, which makes him an knowing accessory to illegal rakcteering, and a "unindicted co-conspirator"

Officers involved in northeast-side shooting, victim could come Monday

Armed man threatened suicide, badly wounded

Police said they'll wait until Monday to release the names of the officers who shot a man after the man threatened to commit suicide on the northeast-side just before midnight Friday.

Officers responded to the home of the man in the 5000 block of Ann Hackley Road on a report of a suicidal man who was armed with a handgun firing shots in the air, according to Raquel Foster, city police spokeswoman.

The man was found a block south in the road in the 4900 block of Rothman Road. The man refused to comply with officers' commands to drop his gun, Foster said. Two officers fired their weapons, wounding the man.

The man was taken to a local hospital and is in serious condition Saturday.

City police and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office continue their investigations.

In accordance with department policy, the two officers are being placed on administrative leave. Foster said the identity of the wounded man and the officers who shot him could come Monday.

Charges for gunman shot by police

In ICU; posed no threat, uncle says

Charges are pending against a Fort Wayne man shot by police Friday, while the man’s family claims police used excessive force.

Michael A. French, 30, remains in the intensive care unit at a Fort Wayne hospital after being shot by officer Benjamin Miller and Sgt. Daniel Ingram.

French’s uncle witnessed the shooting and said his nephew never pointed the gun at anyone but himself. Bob Gonzales said he was trying to persuade French to drop the weapon and that police were going to shoot him if he didn’t.

Chief Rusty York said French wasn’t just trying to commit suicide – he was walking down a road armed with a 9 mm pistol. York said French pointed his weapon at police.

“Whenever lethal force is used, officers are trained to fire at the center of mass,” York said.

Gonzales said police eventually fired eight to 10 shots at French.

Fort Wayne – Fort Wayne police shot and seriously injured an armed man who was not following officers’ orders to drop his gun late Friday, a police official said.

The officers were dispatched to the man’s north-end home in the 5000 block of Ann Hackley Drive at 11:56 p.m. They were responding to a report of a suicidal man who had a handgun and was firing shots in the air, said officer Raquel Foster, police spokeswoman.

Foster said police found the man in the 4900 block of Rothman Road, about two blocks south of his home. She said it seems the situation developed quickly, with the man refusing to comply with commands to put down his gun.

Two officers fired their weapons, and the man was then disarmed.

The man was in serious condition at the scene, and he was taken to a hospital. He remained in serious condition Saturday night, Foster said.

Police said they are waiting until Monday to identify the wounded man and the two officers who fired at him. In compliance with department policy, the two officers are being placed on paid administrative leave.

City police and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the shooting.

Fort Wayne police have identified a city man whom police officers shot and seriously injured late Friday after orders to drop his gun. The officers’ names were also released.

The person who was shot was Michael A. French, 30, of Fort Wayne, who remained in serious condition Monday morning, according to a statement from officer Raquel Foster, police spokeswoman. The statement said charges are pending.

The police officers were Sgt. Daniel Ingram, who has been with the police department for nine years, and officer Benjamin Miller, who has six years on the force. They are on paid administrative leave in compliance with department policy.

Charges are pending against a Fort Wayne man shot by police Friday, while the man’s family claims police used excessive force.

French’s uncle witnessed the shooting and said his nephew never pointed the gun at anyone but himself. Bob Gonzales said he was trying to persuade French to drop the weapon and that police were going to shoot him if he didn’t.

Chief Rusty York said French wasn’t just trying to commit suicide – he was walking down a road armed with a 9 mm pistol. York said French pointed his weapon at police.

“Whenever lethal force is used, officers are trained to fire at the center of mass,” York said.

Gonzales said police eventually fired eight to 10 shots at French.

No party can keep candidates off ballot

I am responding to a the editorial “Local Democrats fail” (April 15) about the issue of a Democratic candidate for the position of Allen County sheriff. I am troubled by the quote, “their (the Allen County Democratic Party’s) inability to prevent a former Klansman to be their candidate for sheriff is unconscionable.”

First and foremost, no political party has – or should have – the ability to keep a candidate who meets legal requirements from the ballot. A candidate with ties to the Ku Klux Klan is abhorrent to me. But even more abhorrent is the thought that one person or one political party would attempt to manipulate or restrict ballot access in any way. Hold your nose if you will; democracy can be messy. Undesirable and unqualified people can and do run for elected office.

Certainly this candidate for sheriff, who calls himself a Democrat, is not representative of the Allen County Democratic Party. His actions and his affiliation have been disavowed continually by the local party. By the way, he has also run as a Republican and a Libertarian in the past. The Democratic Party respects his right to run, but it stops there. His past associations are contrary to all we believe, and he regularly makes a charade of the electoral process.

The reality is this: The local party works diligently to recruit high-quality, competitive candidates for all offices. Nevertheless, credible candidates for the sheriff’s office decided not to file this year.

The Allen County Democratic Party has exciting and well qualified candidates for many other offices on the ballot in 2010. The May primary offers voters great choices. An excellent candidate for Allen County commissioner, Mike Avila, was not even mentioned by The Journal Gazette’s editorial page.

Given the challenges facing our community and residents, the local Democratic Party believes that everyone should be involved in our political process. It is the grass-roots foundation of our democracy. The local media are valuable partners in educating the public about the political process, as well as local government, candidates and campaigns, and the role of every citizen.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Experts tell Indiana lawmakers that the prohibition against marijuana use in the United States has failed.

The legislature's Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee heard testimony Thursday as it began studying whether to legalize marijuana or reduce criminal penalties on small amounts of the drug.

Noah Member of the Marijuana Policy Project says marijuana use is widespread despite its illegality and that laws against possession ruin people's lives. Daniel Abrahamson of the Drug Policy Alliance says states that have legalized medical marijuana or decriminalized personal use haven't seen an upswing in drug use.

Member suggests marijuana should be regulated by the state much like alcohol.

Abrahamson estimates Indiana could raise $44 million a year in sales tax alone if it regulated and taxed marijuana.

It should have been legalized years ago. Chemo patients, cancer sufferers and the like would greatly benefit from this natural substance. Plus, it would free up one third of the jail space for others that actually deserve to be there, like crack and meth losers.Legalize and tax it.

YES!!!! Please legalize it!!! Not only will the state make more money, Cancer patients & others with medical problems could smoke & not have to use so many pain killers. The pain pills are so addicting & also make people sick from taking them. I am a cancer survivour but still need pain pills to get through the day.Marijauna not only helps with pain, but also gives you an appetite. I am down to 94 pounds because I have no appetite taking the pills. So please legalize it for medical & pleasure!!! Alcohal is worse then Marijauna, but yet they still sell it!!!!!!! Its also addicting like pills!!!! No,I have nothing against peeps that drink....I can know longer have a drink or two to relax...because I wont drink on top of my pain pills.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana's current marijuana laws are among the most harsh in the nation, but a group of state lawmakers met Thursday to talk about whether changing those laws would be a good idea.

It all stems from a northern Indiana state senator who wants to restructure the state's marijuana laws. Portage Democrat Karen Tallian’s push is to reduce punishments for people caught with small amounts of marijuana – meaning they wouldn't face criminal charges.

Tallian argues decriminalizing the drug would save the state money on marijuana-related police arrests, court prosecutions, jail time, treatment and probation supervision.

In Indiana, possession of a single joint can result in one year in prison and a $5,000 fine. A person who has more than one ounce of pot, or enough for about 30 joints, can be sentenced to up to three years in prison.

More than 10,000 Hoosiers are charged with marijuana possession each year. Senator Tallian says those cases cost the state millions of dollars annually.

“That’s money that might be better spent on education or building roads. It's time for Indiana to get into this conversation,” she said.

So far, 13 other states have eliminated penalties on or decriminalized small amounts of marijuana. But most cops don't think reducing the penalties for people who are caught with the drug is a good idea.

“I think it’s going to be very hard to enforce,” said Cpl. Ross Uitdenhowen with St. Joseph County police. “Some of these laws now…we say a 0.08 percent blood alcohol level is illegal, but how do you figure out how much of it was due to marijuana consumption as well?”

On Thursday a representative from the Drug Policy Alliance told the Indiana Legislature's Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee states that have decriminalized personal use of pot or legalized medical marijuana haven't seen an upswing in drug use. He also estimated Indiana could raise $44 million a year in sales tax alone if it regulated and taxed marijuana.

“All of these are issues being examined in state legislatures across the country,” said Ryan Dvorak, Indiana’s Eighth District representative. “I wouldn't realistically expect any legislation to pass in the upcoming session. Governor Daniels and several legislative leaders have already expressed their opposition to changing Indiana's current marijuana laws."

From here, the committee will make recommendations to the legislature and lawmakers could be voting on a number of marijuana issues as soon as next year.

WSBT also spoke with three St. Joseph County judges today who said they have opinions on the committee study, but they don't feel it is appropriate for judges to comment on pending legislation because their job is to enforce the law, whether they like it or not.

I have never smoked it. I also do not consider it a drug. It is a plant that grows wild, nothing more. Other than drying there is nothing done to it. How can it possibly be illegal?

I came of age in the 60's. Never so much as took a toke. Passed a few though. As I've gotten older, I think it is ridiculous for it to be illegal. However, employers would be within their rights to say if you flunk a drug test, you're gone. No "disability" for MJ "addiction". Kill someone while driving and it's your fault and MJ in your system, it's like a DUI. Yes, I know that it stays in the system for about 30 days and that you cannot determine by measurement if someone was inpaired. But, just think: legalize it, tax it like a business, and no more money WASTED on drug enforcement. Whoo-hoo.

Anyone who characterizes the deal between the President, Democratic, and Republican leaders as a victory for the American people over partisanship understands neither economics nor politics.

The deal does not raise taxes on America’s wealthy and most fortunate — who are now taking home a larger share of total income and wealth, and whose tax rates are already lower than they have been, in eighty years. Yet it puts the nation’s most important safety nets and public investments on the chopping block.

It also hobbles the capacity of the government to respond to the jobs and growth crisis. Added to the cuts already underway by state and local governments, the deal’s spending cuts increase the odds of a double-dip recession. And the deal strengthens the political hand of the radical right.

Yes, the deal is preferable to the unfolding economic catastrophe of a default on the debt of the U.S. government. The outrage and the shame is it has come to this choice.

More than a year ago, the President could have conditioned his agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond 2010 on Republicans’ agreement not to link a vote on the debt ceiling to the budget deficit. But he did not.

Many months ago, when Republicans first demanded spending cuts and no tax increases as a condition for raising the debt ceiling, the President could have blown their cover. He could have shown the American people why this demand had nothing to do with deficit reduction but everything to do with the GOP’s ideological fixation on shrinking the size of the government — thereby imperiling Medicare, Social Security, education, infrastructure, and everything else Americans depend on. But he did not.

And through it all the President could have explained to Americans that the biggest economic challenge we face is restoring jobs and wages and economic growth, that spending cuts in the next few years will slow the economy even further, and therefore that the Republicans’ demands threaten us all. Again, he did not.

The radical right has now won a huge tactical and strategic victory. Democrats and the White House have proven they have little by way of tactics or strategy.

By putting Medicare and Social Security on the block, they have made it more difficult for Democrats in the upcoming 2012 election cycle to blame Republicans for doing so.

By embracing deficit reduction as their apparent goal – claiming only that they’d seek to do it differently than the GOP – Democrats and the White House now seemingly agree with the GOP that the budget deficit is the biggest obstacle to the nation’s future prosperity.

The budget deficit is not the biggest obstacle to our prosperity. Lack of jobs and growth is. And the largest threat to our democracy is the emergence of a radical right capable of getting most of the ransom it demands.

I POINTED THIS OUT THE DAY THE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE. Has to do with broadcasters not being allowed to monopolize a media market.

FORT WAYNE, IND.: Nexstar Broadcasting is crying monopoly in one of the markets where it dropped a Fox affiliation. The company filed a civil antitrust suit in the Northern District of Indiana against Granite Broadcasting, which picked up the Fox affiliation in for Fort Wayne. The agreement with Fox gives Granite control of three of the top four network affiliates in the market, No. 107 in the nation.

Granite’s WISE-TV carries NBC and will add Fox to a digital subchannel. It also runs WPTA-TV, the ABC affiliate, through a local marketing agreement with Malara Broadcast Group. The two stations also carry MyNetwork and the CW, bringing network affiliations between them to a total of five.

“Nexstar filed the litigation to remedy the anticompetitive impact that has been caused and will be caused by Granite’s efforts to monopolize local advertising sales in the Fort Wayne, Ind., designated market area,” the Irving, Texas, broadcast company said. “Granite will control local television advertising sales for stations affiliated with the Fox, NBC and ABC networks, as well as the CW and MyNetwork TV networks.”

Nexstar’s suit charges that Granite’s market footprint violates federal and state antitrust law.

“Nexstar is seeking a judgment that will cause Granite’s ability to control the advertising sales and revenues of at least one of the three ‘Big Four’ network affiliations to be terminated. It has also sought treble damages for injuries that it has sustained and will sustain as a result of Granite’s anticompetitive acts,” the company said, not specifying an amount.

Nexstar’s been busy this year, battling with Fox and more recently, exploring a sale. The company, which owns 65 TV stations, has been dropping Fox affiliations over the network’s demand for a split of retransmission fees. WFFT-TV, it’s Fort Wayne station, is going indie on Aug. 1. Last week, Nexstar announced that it had hired advisers to explore a possible sale.

Nexstar is being represented in its lawsuit by Constantine Cannon LLP and Krieg Devault LLP.

I haven't decided if the Editors of the NS and Mr Leininger, specifically, are "shock -jocks"- taking the most extreme conservative points of views to incite discussion, or do they truly believe what they write? I read the NS, pretty much daily, and i'm appalled at the callous disregard for other peoples misery.
I would not want to call them racist, but the fact is that most poor people are not white, through no fault of their own, and unfortunatley , prejudice based on skin color is alive and well here in Fort Wayne. So to hear the NS writers constantly deride poor people grates on my nerves.
Next- poor people are not poor because they choose to be. Especially after the 2008 market crash. I have been poor, and i hate it.
I would be a banker, or financial consultant, or such, if someone would give me a job in that field. Thats where the money is. A cashier at a big box retailer, fast food joint, supermarket, etc works much harder, for more demanding customers, for waaay less, and little opportunity for advancement, unless they want to be a career burger flipper. If you can count to 10, make change, and are polite to people, well, you can be a banker. Banks worry about thieves, but it seems the thieves are all at the top- Wall Street, not your corner bank CSR, you know?

Only in America could luxuries turn into government-fed needs

In few other countries would you see a headline like the one on The News-Sentinel's front page on Friday.

“States' cuts to cooling aid hurt poor,” the headline read above an Associated Press account of how budget shortfalls have caused some states to eliminate programs that help low-income people pay their electric bills, “forcing thousands to go without air conditioning when they need it most.”

Now, the midst of a dangerous and even deadly heat wave is perhaps not the best time to point out how the inability to operate an appliance that until fairly recently was considered a luxury is apparently just the obstacle to be overcome by government.

But as Congress and President Obama demonstrate their utter inability to deal with the nation's soaring debt in a lasting and responsible way, the need to distinguish needs from wants, and obligations from rights, has seldom been more appropriate or necessary.

With much of the world's population living in conditions that make the Rescue Mission look like the Taj Mahal, some of our leading politicians refuse to make even modest changes to America's so-called “safety net,” preferring instead to further strain the very nation and capitalist system responsible for our prosperity.

The budget battle is often framed in terms of the supposedly growing gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” as a way to justify efforts to increase taxes so the wealthy pay their “fair share.” But as a recent study by the Heritage Foundation makes clear, that gap is narrowing in ways that should not be ignored in the debate.

In 2005, it found, 84 percent of all U.S. households had air conditioning, 79 percent had cable or satellite TV and 68 percent had personal computers. Among America's 30 million “poor,” 78 percent had air conditioning, 64 percent had cable or satellite TV and 38 percent had computers.

I'm not saying such things are unimportant, but I lived without them much of my life – and nobody from the government ever suggested I was poor or offered to give me stuff at other peoples' expense. But that's how it is when luxuries become necessities and necessities become rights to be provided by the government.

A higher standard of living is a wonderful thing – if it is the product of responsible decisions and sustainable spending. But there's little doubt that poverty and the perceived need for government assistance can be shortened, minimized or avoided through such things as education, marriage and healthy lifestyles, just as there's little doubt that the demand for spending will always exceed the supply once rights are defined in economic instead of political terms. Just this week, the Institute of Medicine recommended that contraceptives, sterilization and reproductive education should be covered by health insurance plans under Obamacare at no cost to patients.

That “right to pursue happiness” apparently now includes government-subsidized safe sex.

Americans have long embraced their obligation to help the less-fortunate, but when politicians presume to tell productive people how much of the money they earned they “need” to keep, it will not be long before generosity turns to resentment, and gratitude to an insatiable sense of entitlement.

A reader asked me recently: When's the last time a recipient of a government program thanked the taxpayer? I don't know, but who gives thanks for something they think they have a “right” to possess?

A recent survey by Rasmusson found that just 34 percent of Americans think a tax hike should be part of any deficit-reduction deal, Quinnipiac came to the opposite conclusion. Maybe the difference had something to do with Quinnipiac specifying that higher taxes be limited to the wealthy and corporations.

According to the non-partisan National Taxpayers Union, the top 5 percent of Americans earners paid nearly 59 percent of the federal income taxes in 2008 – and the top 50 percent more than 97 percent of the taxes. But when half the nation pays virtually nothing, the percentage of voters who can expect more help at no expense is clearly nearing the tipping point.

Perhaps the politicians and pollsters should ask each of us: Are you willing to pay higher taxes?

Or they could just do what Allen County Council said it will do this week when preparing for next year's budget – what most Americans do every day: Cut spending and live within their means.

But that would be elitist, mean-spirited and extremist.

So just shut up and enjoy the air conditioning.

Hoosiers want truth - not scare tactics - from Washington leaders

Since I came to Washington last November, I've realized how out of touch this city is with the rest of America. The ongoing budget battle gives a classic example of how politicians hide behind glitzy talking points and miss the common-sense solutions that Hoosiers easily grasp.

It doesn't take a committee of image consultants, speechwriters or economists to understand that Washington has a spending problem. Think of a family that brings home $2,200 a month. If they spend $3,600 a month, they'll quickly go bankrupt. Few of us in our daily lives would be so reckless. But that's exactly the policy Washington has chosen. This year alone, the federal government spent more than $3.6 trillion, but took in only about $2.2 trillion in revenues. That's a deficit of $1.4 trillion in just one year. Every small-business owner, farmer and entrepreneur in America knows this isn't going to work. Something has to change.

I was sent to Washington to make that change, and I've worked with my colleagues to push genuine reform. In April, the House passed the Path to Prosperity, the Republican budget I worked on in the Budget Committee. The title says it all. By cutting $6.2 trillion over 10 years, we put our nation on a strong footing and begin the journey toward balanced budgets and economic recovery. This week, as part of our “Cut, Cap and Balance Act,” House Republicans demanded that a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution be sent to the states for ratification.

In Washington, nothing moves unless it's pushed. The debt ceiling has pushed the conflict between visions — “higher taxes and minimal cuts” on the left and “cut, cap and balance” on the right. The president says Washington doesn't need a constitutional amendment to balance our budget. I firmly disagree. Capitol Hill desperately needs a healthy dose of the basic principles that balance budgets at kitchen tables across the nation.

Unfortunately, career politicians who are more worried about the next election than doing what's right for the country have decided that, instead of offering their own plan to address our debt burden, scare tactics will score cheap political victories. Their favorite targets are Social Security and Medicare. In each case, though, their cheap talk can't stand to reason.

Don't let anyone sell the idea that Republicans are out to destroy Social Security and Medicare. This week's Cut, Cap and Balance Act expressly exempted Social Security, Medicare and veterans benefits from any debt- ceiling deal in the immediate future. In fact, our long-term solution, the Path to Prosperity, preserves the programs for future generations.

Did you know that by age 65, the average couple will have contributed an average of $109,000 but will receive $343,000 in benefits? That's not sustainable for Americans my age. That's why the Path to Prosperity ensures that Americans 55 and older will not see any changes to Social Security or Medicare, but careful reforms will save those programs for younger Americans.

Sadly, these facts aren't going to stop Washington's usual suspects. Right now, President Obama is hiding behind seniors. Rather than putting his own plan on the table, the president has threatened that Social Security checks may not be delivered.

The truth is that the federal government already has the funds to avoid default by paying the interest on the debt, maintain our national security by paying the Department of Defense and keep our commitment to seniors by sending Social Security checks.

In fact, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner sends out the checks and is directly accountable to President Obama. If Social Security checks aren't sent, it will only be because the president is withholding them himself. Months ago, I realized the administration might play games with homeland security and critical benefits. That's why I introduced H.R. 728 to ensure that payments to Social Security, debt and defense were prioritized.

The facts are neither left nor right. Washington can't hide from simple economics. Cheap scare tactics might make sensational commercials. They don't balance budgets, keep promises or put Hoosiers back to work. These are the things I'm focusing on. I know Americans want results, not rhetoric.

STOP SOCIALIST FARM SUBSIDIES.
I read this articla, and watched, the congressman on WANE.COM in an interview with the shows host. Its obvious that congressman Stutzman is another brainwashed tea party politician, with out a clue about the realties of government, or economics. Especially when it comes to socialism in a mixed US economy. I would suggest that if Stutzman is truly serious about cutting spending, socialism, entitlements, that he start by first donating HIS farm subsidy to the bureau of the debt, treasury department, washing ton Dc, and help lower the deficit and natl. debt.
Next, if stutzman is serious, he should sponsor a bill to stop all agriculture, and farm subsidies, to Indiana and the other states farmers, and agribusinesses. that alone would save the taxpayers and the national budget BILLIONS! If the congressman is serious about cutting spending, and cutting socialism, and big government entitlement programs, he will do this monday morning. Or is he just a blow-hard, like his predecessor? we shall see...

Facts on the Social Security Checks
1) The government has issued $2.6 trillion in Social Security Trust Fund Special Bonds.

2) By law they can be redeemed when a current account deficit surfaces.

3) The Treasury Department is bound to redeem the "bonds" (they really arent bonds for a number of reasons).

4) When the Treasury redeems the "bonds" TOTAL GOVERNMENT DEBT subject to the debt cap falls by the amount of the redemption. This frees up the Treasury Department to issue new bonds equal in total to the redemption without exceeding the debt limit. It's obviously an accounting trick, but clearly there is absolutely no reason to withhold Social Security as long as any of the $2.6 trillion in "bonds" remains. If the President doesn't know this, he needs to be brought up to speed.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - As President Obama and lawmakers work to hammer out a deal on the debt ceiling, Third District Congressman Marlin Stutzman said the mood in Washington, D.C. has definitely become tense.

"A lot of apprehension. A lot of posturing," Rep. Stutzman said, describing the feelings on Capitol Hill.

Stutzman said this isn't the first time lawmakers have been asked to raise America's debt ceiling and, like in the past, he still isn't a supporter of it.

"By raising the debt ceiling, that gives this administration and Congress the ability to borrow more money rather than to cut spending and reform our spending habits," said Stutzman.

Rep. Stutzman said he'd like to see the country follow Indiana's lead of requiring a debt-free budget. He said he believes the U.S. needs a balanced budget amendment added to the Constitution, and that voting on that amendment would have to be part of any deal to raise the debt limit.

Whatever the outcome, he said he and fellow legislators are faced with a big decision.

"This is probably going to be the biggest vote that this Congress faces this year and probably next. I believe this is really a time in our nation's history when we need to face the facts and realize that the arithmetic just doesn't add up."

Although Republicans like Stutzman aren't in favor of raising the debt ceiling, he said they are willing to compromise as long as the country's spending behaviors change. "We have to sit down at the kitchen table like every family does and say, 'Okay. What can we do without? Can we do without some cable t.v.?'"

Stutzman explained that people from around the district have told him they want the U.S. to have a balanced budget and are willing to do with less.
"We're willing to figure out a way to make sure we are fiscally sound for the future of our country."

David Christopher Roach NICE SPEECH! , congressman. I dont agree with a lot of what you said, but your oratory, voice projection, technical skills were great. I agree we need to cut spending. we disagree on where. CUT? not on the backs of the poor- not on social spending that helps everyone. Cong. Pelosi said theres 36 billion of cuts in social spending, but 37 billion in corporate welfare to big oil. that is not good. CAP? It is going to take time to slow the hurtling train wreck, and bring it under control. President clinton was on track to budget surpluses/ reducing the natl. debt. And that went up in smoke- 2 unpaid wars, un funded tax cuts, i wont get partisan, but post clinton was bad policy, economically/ fiscally speaking. BALANCE? why not just do it, - a mix of spending cuts where possible, but revenue increases to bridge the gap. ? Theres 40 trillion of wealth, plus 14 trillion of cash hidden away/ stashed in off shore/foreign/overseas banks by the wealthiest individuals, and corporations. And another 2 trillion in cash likewise in US banks. theres plenty of money, its just misallocated resources. We have both seen the drastic cuts the states hand local govts have had to make to keep their balanced budgets. Indiana's still doesnt account for the 1 billion buck loan from the US govt for unemployment payouts. WE DONT NEED A BALANCED FEDERAL BUDGET, WE JUST NEED CONGRESSMEN, SENATORS WHO WILL EXERCISE WISELY ALLOCATING THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES. for the greatest good. thank you for the soapbox, and i yield back my time. again- good speech, Marlin. Dont drink the kool-aid. use wise, prudent economic and public policy advice, frm both sides of the aisle, and re-election will come from doing a good job, not the hacks in DC. remember your roots, "young JEDI...."

The downgrade in America's credit rating, despite this month's deal to avoid default, may have shocked Wall Street, but it should have come as no surprise to politicians in Washington, D.C., U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman said Monday.

“This was expected. Most members of Congress were told it could happen,” Stutzman said in his Fort Wayne office. “Barack Obama is the first president to see the country's credit downgraded during his term, and it may cost him the election.”

Although much of the nation's attention in the days leading up to this month's bipartisan deal focused on efforts to avoid default by increasing the nation's debt limit, Stutzman said the debt itself remains the problem – a problem he said the agreement he opposed did too little to address.

“We had the chance to at least hit a single, but we popped up,” the 3rd District Republican said of the deal, which is designed to cut federal spending by $2.1 trillion over 10 years. But the deal also allows the debt to continue to grow – a debt that has reached $14.6 million, or nearly $47,000 per citizen.

Obama and other members of his administration have questioned the legitimacy of Standard & Poor's decision to lower the U.S. rating from AAA to AA+. But Stutzman said S&P's decision was a logical result of Washington having “avoided the tough decisions of leadership. Those days are over … (This) must be the obituary for reckless deficit spending.”

In a statement, Stutzman challenged Obama's assertion Monday that a “month of wrangling” over the debt ceiling contributed to Wall Street's recent slide. “Unfortunately, the timeline skirts the fact that, back on May 31, the House voted on his original request for a debt-ceiling increase that cut nothing and ignored the deficit.

Despite Obama's continued call for higher taxes on the wealthy – something the Republican-dominated House of Representatives is not likely to support – Stutzman said there may still be a chance to increase revenues through a bipartisan congressional deal to reduce tax rates while eliminating many deductions and loopholes. Obama's position is driven by ideology, not practicality, Stutzman said.

“When 50 percent of Americans pay all the taxes and 50 percent pay none, you're creating a nation of givers and takers,” he said.

"A Nation of Takers"- dont you find this outlook a little insulting? fellow voters, and citizens? And "a nation of givers"?

The greedy Wealthy are hardly givers. And the poor are hardly takers. This current wave of tea party politicians seems to think that Government Steals from the rich to give to the poor, while Big mega-global industry, etc are generous givers( and job creators" who generously help the poor, by providing them with jobs).

Whats wrong with this picture? Whats wrong with these people? Whats wrong with America?
And who are the poor- mostly non-white people.
Not to mention these peoples War on the middle Class- Union workers, public employees, And any working class person who works for the government ( of we the people, by the way) whose jobs should be privatized by these people, and whose jobs should be shipped overseas.

Their gods are Greed, Avarice, And Shameless naked class warfare against the poor, and middle class; and their prophets are Ludwig Von Mises ( von Miser- lol)- some obscure Austrian Economist; and the Twin terrors- the Koch Brothers. How far to the far right are they willing to take America? Google " Koch Brothers and John Birch Society"- the very heart of darkness for far out conspiracy theories, communist witch hunts, militarism, and imperialism. Lunatic fringe political beliefs would not be far off the mark.
Their propagandists are the discredited Rupert Murdoch, and his minions in the far right media- AM talk radio, and Fox News, and sleazy tabloids. WOW!

Snarlin' Marlin Strikes Back!
So Snarlinâ€™ Marlin thinks the working poor need to pay more taxes? Of course he does, someone has to help subsidize his family farm!

But seriouslyâ€»

Snarlinâ€™ Marlin says â€œ50 percentâ€ of Americans â€œpay no taxes.â€ None. Of course, what he really means is 50 percent pay no federal income tax. If you buy gasoline, pay a light bill, and purchase license plates for a car, you pay taxes. But Snarlinâ€™ Marlin canâ€™t be bothered with such details! He a has a federally subsidized farm to look over!

I think that Marlin needs to immediately take 10 percent off his cited percentage of 50, because at least 10% of the potential tax base doesnâ€™t have jobs. Not that Marlin (or Leininger) actually care about that.

Hereâ€™s the type of tax cuts Snarlinâ€™ Marlin has a problem with.

If you are a college student and pay tuition, you get a tax credit for that, reducing the amount of federal income tax you contribute. Therefore, a student working a minimum wage job ( a likely scenario) pays no income tax . Same goes if you own a home and have children. Mothers and fathers who work low skill, low paying jobs are able to use their income to provide for their families rather than contribute to the federal income tax base, but these students and families still contribute to FICA taxes and the local tax base.

Snarlinâ€™ Marlin apparently wants to change all that. More taxes for students and working income families. Thatâ€™s Marlin Stutzmanâ€™s solution. After all, his farm really needs money.
